TPS65983B: RESETZ output issues vis-à-vis PP_EXT

Part Number: TPS65983B

I have a customer working on a Thunderbolt 3 (TBT3) solution based on Intel's Apex Creek design.

They were able to interface one of their PCIe add-on boards to a TBT3 port on a laptop.

They've since modified the design, removing the PP_EXT circuit.  After this change, they are having issues with RESETZ not being released as expected.

They must do the following to release RESETZ properly:

  • Power off our circuit board and the laptop
  • Make sure the TBT3 cable is disconnected from our circuit
  • Power on the laptop and our circuit board
  • Plug the TBT3 cable into our circuit board

Once this is done, RESETZ is released and everything works fine.

Customer suspects there is a firmware issue in which firmware is setup to use PP_Ext power for VBUS.

Can you comment?

  • HI Gregory,

The TPS65983B is constrained by design to work with Intel TBT reference designs. The firmware for this device is also locked to the specific TBT reference designs. Changing the reference layout is not supported for this device.
