Does "Providing code patch to replace functions inside the application ROM" refer to firmware updates?
Firmware updates, then, can be loaded to it through I2C?

Yes, that specific phrase is referring to firmware updates. For your second question if firmware updates can be uploaded through I2C.

Yes, they can be uploaded over I2C via a patch bundle (purpose for app note), but the firmware update can note be sent by itself over I2C without being bundled with the app configuration through the GUI.
