TPS65981: USBC display with HDMI switch

Part Number: TPS65981
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987D, , TPS65987, BQ4050

Hi

I am just working on a PoC at the moment and want to check a block diagram design. Battery powered, with charging coming from USBC.

Is this a viable design?

Thanks

  • Hi Laurence,

The Type-C PD portion looks correct. Is there a specific reason why you chose the TPS65981? I would recommend the TPS65987D as we have a reference design that you may greatly benefit from. Below is a link to it. Also, you will most likely have the PD controller connected to the BQ device via I2C where the PD controller is the master. I've also attached an app note that explains how to go about this using our products. Hope this helps answer your questions.

  • Hi

Thanks for the response and helpful information.

Truth be told, I hadn't seen the TPS65987, but looking at the datasheet, it looks preferable. Especially if it has a higher power internal switch. It will save on external components. I think I will get the EVM as it has exactly the DP expansion I was looking at.

I have been working from the example circuit here http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-01515. It is slightly different from the one that you linked in that it uses the BQ4050 cell fuel gauge and balancer. We are going for 4 cell design, so would prefer to use a balancer. Would the TPS65987 be OK to control the BQ4050 as well? I need the MCU to be aware of all the USBC events and to be able to poll battery levels, so maybe I could have the MCU as a second master on the i2c bus, but only to communicate with the BQ4050.

    Many thanks

  • Hello Laurence,

Yes, the TPS65987 would be able to control the BQ4050 as well.

TIDA-01515 is a good reference design if you are wanting to have two ports on your system (one source one sink). TIDA-01627 is a good reference if you are wanting only one port to be on the system to also act as a source and sink.

  • Hi Adam

Thanks, we don't need a dual port setup like the TIDA-01515, but are keen for the BQ4050. Will take bits from each.

    Thanks
