TPS65983B: is the flash memory needed?

Part Number: TPS65983B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65988, TPS65987D

Hi! I'm Alberto from Mexico, we are using the usb type-c connectors to carry ethernet signals. We are using this chip to detect the cable orientation and we are using the usb 2.0 multiplexer to multiplex the signal from the connectors. My doubt is, is it possible to use the chip without the flash memory? What kind of application should I need to upload to the flash memory.

Regards

  • Hi Alberto,

I first want to check with you about the choice of TPS65983B. This device is specially designed and constrained to work with Intel Thunderbolt Reference Designs. If your product does not exactly match one of these configurations then the device firmware may work differently than you expect.

If your design does not match a specific Reference Design then I suggest evaluating the TPS95982 or TPS65987D / TPS65988.

The product folder for each of these parts will contain an application note describing how to configure these devices using an Embedded Controller over I2C -- "SPI-Less boot"

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Hi Scott,

Thanks for your answer, no we aren't going to work with Intel Thunderbolt, we just want to use the cable orientation feature and the embedded multiplexer, we are only going to need the D+, D-, SBU1 and SBU2 to use base 100T ethernet. Can this chip work under those conditions?

    Regards

  • Hi Alberto,

No, the TPS65983B device is only for use with Intel Thunderbolt.

I would suggest checking the TPS65987DDH and TPS65988DH Host Interface Technical Reference Manual (Rev. B)

Because you are not using these devices to engage USB Type C Power delivery, you may want to consider a different solution.

    Regards,
