1. Can you let me know if the TPS65987D and TPS65988 are basically the same except the TPS65988 is dual port? Is the only major difference the additional Cable-Detect & USB-PD PHY Cable Power block?
2. Are they expected to share the same firmware line for bug fixes or will they be treated independently?
3. Can you highlight any other functional differences expected between the two?
Hi David,
1. You are correct, the TPS65988 is the dual-port version of the TPS65987D and adds the additional CC lines, VCONN Supply, and USB PD PHY.
2. The TPS65987D and TPS65988 share the same FW base image. However, the configuration files used on them are not compatible as one is single port and the other is dual-port.
3. The TPS65988 has 2 power paths for 2 ports, so if you need to support Source and Sink on both ports, you will need to design an external PFET power path that is controlled by a GPIO of the TPS65988. For TPS65987D, there are also 2 power paths for a single port, so you can source and sink on the internal power paths.
Thank you,
Eric
