Repeater program requirements

Hi, I need a plan for my new design. The main controller needs to access multiple Ethernet phys across the board through MDC/MDIO, about 9 of which are required to support the level conversion from 3.3v to 1.2v, support the use of repeater, and support hot plugging. If there is no single repeater scheme, discrete scheme can also be accepted, such as repeater + Voltage level translation scheme. If Repeater is not used, Voltage level translation is used separately, we wonder whether the driving current can support 9 PHY, please help to indicate.

  • Hi,

Is this a question about a specific TI PHY? In general, I can say that it is possible to connect multiple PHYs on the same MDIO-MDC bus. The max number is generally determined by the number of unique PHY address available on the PHY. If the PHY only supports 8 PHY address, then connecting 9 would lead to duplicate PHY address which can be a issue when you want to selectively access a certain PHY. For the driving current, you will need to refer to the level shiftier datasheet that you plan to use.
