TPS65981: TVS Recommendations on VBUS

Hello,

I am wondering the TVS and Diode recommendations on VBUS in conjunction with the TPS65981.  I have implemented a schottky diode to deal with the power level. In my situation I am the source of power and in DFP.  I have heard recommendations to add a TVS to VBUS but see no examples of features that can be pointed to in terms of bidirectional vs unidirectional and forward violtage drop.

    Hi Jason,

    The TVS diode will help if a user connects a non-compliant adapter to the system with a hot 20V VBUS. In this case, the TVS diode will clamp the voltage to ensure the absolute max rating on the VBUS pins is not violated. When a non-compliant adapter is connected with a hot 20V VBUS, the ringing on VBUS can be over 30V.
