TCA9539-Q1: Clarifications

Part Number: TCA9539-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC59116-Q1, TCA9555

Hi All,

Below are the clarifications,

#Can i give the VCC=3.3V DC, IO expander port pins=5V DC? Will it be OK?
#What is the use of reset signal by eliminating I2C address signal?
#In general, we can use the GPIO as LED driving purpose. Similarly, in the TCA9539-Q1 shown as LED driving example.
In this case, Can i use TCA9539-Q1 instead of TLC59116-Q1 16 channel LED driver?

Regards,

  • 1. The I/O ports on the TCA9539-Q1 can tolerate 5v inputs while the device is powered with 3.3v to Vcc. The I/O pins cannot drive a voltage above Vcc as an output.

    2. The reset pin allows a system master to reset the TCA9539-Q1 to put its registers in their default state without needing to cycle power on the device. This feature replaces one of the available address pins when compared to the TCA9555 which has 3 address pins allowing 8 devices on the same I2C bus. The TCA9539-Q1 offers 2 address pins allowing 4 devices on the same bus.

    3. The TCA9539-Q1 can indeed be used as an LED driver. However the TLC59116-Q1 offers more features such as a greater supply voltage range (3.3v or 5v), programmable brightness control using PWM, and more available address pins (A0 - A3) so more devices can be used on the same I2C bus.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,

    Eric
