SN75LVPE801: Redriver driving distance capability under CAT5e or CAT6 LAN Cable

Part Number: SN75LVPE801
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65LVPE501

Hi Team,

My customer is thinking to use SN75LVPE801 as Redriver for PCI Express Gen1 (2.5Gbps) 1 Lane application.
When CAT5e or CAT6 LAN cable is used between boards and the Redriver of SN75LVPE801 drive that, how long distance can the SN75LVPE801 Redriver drive?
Are there any guideline regarding the redriver driving distance capability?
Thank you.

  • Hi,

I would recommend using the SN65LVPE501 instead.  It is better equiped to handle PCIe applications and is optimized for Gen1 and Gen2 applications.

The CAT5e and CAT6 LAN cables can work quite well, but generally they are not specified up to 2.5Gbps on a single lane of operation.  Several vendors have developed PCIe specific 85 Ohm versions of popular SAS cables to work in PCIe storage applications.  I would recommend to consider one of these cables if possible.

At 2.5Gbps I would expect it is possible to easily get several meters to cable to link.

    Regards,

    Lee
