DP83848I: What is the difference between these two transformers in using?

Hi，

     In using DP83848I ，I noticed this doc http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla088a/snla088a.pdf

  

   I'm not sure these two transformers can replace each other？Please let me know  what is the difference in use，thank you very much!

    Hi Peng,

    One schematics shows discrete transformer, where transformer is separate from RJ-45 connector. The other example is of a RJ-45 with transformer integrated inside. Both examples are acceptable as long as the electrical specifications are satisfied. Because their construction is very different, they will not be footprint compatible. DP83848I can work with both discrete transformers and integrated transformers.

    Sorry，I didn't express it clearly.  what I want to know is the transformer  polarity .these two integrated RJ-45 connector has same footprint..

    Hi Peng,

    The dots are used to convey the polarity of the coupling between the primary and secondary winding of the transformers. For this purpose, the winding will not affect the transformer performance. If the footprint and the electrical parameters are matching then the two transformers can be used. It is important to make sure that magnetics meet the requirements in the datasheet of the PHY.
