TPIC8101: Could you show me an example of knock sensor which can be connect to TPIC8101 like TPIC EVM?

Hello guys,

One of my customers is considering using TPIC8101 for their new engine systems. They want to implement 6~8 pcs knock sensors for one engine and they want to read these sensors output using one TPIC8101 only.

For that, they will try to insert analog multiplexer like SN74LV4052A-Q1 between each knock sensor and TI8101 sensor input.

They have the follwing questions at this moment. Could you please tell me your comment for each question?

Q1. Can SN74LV4052A-Q1 be used between each knock sensor and TI8101 sensor signal input as a multiplexer? Or one knock sensor output must be connected to input resistor of inverting amp of TPIC8101?

In other words, in case of 6~8 pcs knock sensors using , is 3~4 pcs TPIC8101 needed?

Q2. They will try to use TPIC8101 EVM. Also they want to know what knock sensor is better for the EVM. So could you show me an example of knock sensor part number which can be connect to TPIC8101 EVM?

Hi Kazuya,

We have not tried the sensor with analog mux like SN74LV4052A-Q1. But I dont see a reason not to use the SN74LV4052A-Q1 for muxing multiple knock sensors with the TPIC8101. I have reviewed the SN74LV4052A-Q1 datasheet and customer should be able to use this multiplexer.

For Q2, Unfortuantely we wont be able to provide any recommendation about knock sensor. This is a old device and we have limited support on this device.

Could I ask you a few additional questions?

Q1. Can a knock sensor be connected to TPIC8101 with Figure 5. Application Schematic in the device datasheet?

Q2. The customer thinks any charge amplifier is needed for knock sensor signal sensing.

In TPIC8101 case, is any charge amplifier not needed? Are two ope amps in TPIC8101 the charge amplifier?

Hi Kazuya,

I apologize for the delayed reply.

Adding muxes and using more than two sensors is not a typical application of this device. We also have not tried this way to connect the sensors to the device. Because of limited support on this device, i couldnt find more information on this request. I am sorry, i am not able to provide information on this request.
