TIOS1015: Could you tell me any TVS diode to protect TIOS1015 from surge

Part Number: TIOS1015
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVS3300, TIOS101, TIOL111

One of my customers is just evaluating TIOS1015 for their next products.

The device function is no problem for their systems. But the device was broken without any TVS diode atacching when they did surge test to VCC-GND. (The surge voltage is about 500V)

They know any TVS diode must be attached between VCC-GND or VCC-OUT/OUT-GND or both to avoid the deivce breaking. They have a few questions about TVS for TIOS1015 as the followis.

Q1. In general, where should TVS diode be attached between signals? Is it between VCC-GND? VCC-OUT? OUT-GND? Or all?

Q2. Which is TI TVS diode effective for TIOS1015? Could you please tell me the TVS parts number?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

 Best regards,

 Kazuya.

  • Nakai-san,

Typically placing TVS diodes on the pins that are connected off the board is sufficient which is usually VCC, OUT, and GND.  If the VCC_OUT is connected to a circuit or load off the board and would be exposed to the external sources of surge transients, then diodes could be added to those pins as well.  But usually the VCC_OUT is only used locally on the board and the VCC, OUT, and GND pins are the only pins that need protection.

Placing a TVS diode between VCC and GND, as well as OUT and GND is typical.  There are several diodes available for use, but I will reference the TIDA-01478 TI Design that uses a TIOL111 and a TIOS101 with optional TVS diodes for enhanced surge protection.  This design used the SMAJ30CA.  There are other designs that have tried to use TI's TVS3300, but we have found it to have a few issues and do not recommend its use.  I am not aware of a current TI component that is proven to work in this application.
