TVS3301: Meaning of Thermal pad floating

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVS1401,

Hello,

I have a question for thermal pad of TVS3301 and TVS1401.

Both datasheets say that the thermal pad must be floating.
Does it mean the thermal pad can be left not soldering to anywhere on PCB?
Or it must be soldered to a PCB pad but the pad is isolated to any other areas for just mechanical performance?

Regards,
Oba

  • Hello,

It can be unsoldered and work technically but it is best mechanical practice to solder it to an isolated copper pad. Technically your thermal performance will be better as well but this is a surge device and surge normally happens so fast that most of the heat is only dissipated in the die itself.
