TPS65988: Short between 2 VBUS lines in Sink operation mode

Part Number: TPS65988

Hi, everyone,

In our design,
- Both of 2 Type-C ports are DRP.
- Only one 1 ports can supply source power with our products.

(We cannot receive power from 2 ports simultaneously.)

Now we assume that
in one side Type-C port, PD adaptor is attached and supplies VBUS=5V,
and the other side Type-C port, PD adaptor is attached and supplies VBUS=20V.

If both of these 2 Sink path FET are ON, these VBUS lines are shorten,

which results in overcurrent.

Does any protection function by TPS65988 work if these 2 Sink path FETs are ON by mistaken?
Or do we have to add external protection circuit around TPS65988?
(ex: VBUS reverse protection circuit.)

Best Regards,

  • Hi Maurice,

Yes, there is a level of protection provided by the TPS65988 for the PP_HV line from VBUS. I'm not sure I understand the application for the two ports that you mentioned, so the VBUS lines for both ports get shorted when you are sinking to both ports?

I recommend following the datasheet guidelines and recommendations for the PD controller. You can reference sections 8.3.2 and 8.3.3 of the datasheet to find more detailed information regarding the protections that are in place here: https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps65988.pdf

    Thank you,

    Hari
