DP83849I: PHY address : 4bit[3:0] or 4bit[4:1] or 5bit[4:0]?

Part Number: DP83849I

Hello,

Regarding to PHY address on DP83849I, my customer is asking a question.

(Question)

PHY address register is described both as 4bit and 5bit in datasheet.

For example, it is described as 4bit[3:0] in page 62 but it is described as 5bit[4:0] in page 77.

Also, it is described as 4bit[4:1] in page 10.

Which is correct, 4bit[3:0] or 4bit[4:1] or 5bit[4:0]?

Regards,

  • Hi Tao,

There is an error on page 62.

Page 77 and page 10 are correct.

The PHY address is a bit[4:0]. Bit[0] depends on the Port, i.e. 0b0 for Port A and 0b1 for Port B.

On page 10, it is explaining how Bit[4:1] are selected based on bootstrap.

On page 77, the field is Bit[4:0], which matches page 10.

  • Hello Ross,

    Thank you for reply.

    I have more some question.

    (1) When PHY address strap pin is set as “0000”,

port A address is strapped 00000(0h) and port B address is strapped 00001(1h).

In this case, port B address is strapped automatically. (As Port A address +1)

    My understanding is correct?

    (2) About bit0 of PHY address register (page 77)

This value is fixed zero and can’t be changed by user.

(Regardless of bit0 value, port B address is strapped ss Port A address +1.)

    My understanding is correct?

  • Hello Ross,

Would you let me know current status about my re-question?
