TCAN1051HGV: Suitable CAN-L/H TVS

Part Number: TCAN1051HGV

Hi

We are using the TCAN1051HGV in product and want to add an external TVS on the CAN-L/H data lines as suggested as an optional additional protection in the datasheet.

The datasheet lists the following absolute maximum ratings (H-variant):

  • CAN-H / CAN-L voltage range: ±70 V
  • Max differential voltage between CAN-H and CAN-L: ±70 V

We want to select a TVS which ensures that the maximum limits are not exceeded and at the same time not be too restrictive.

The STMicroelectronics/ESDCAN05-2BWY has the following specs (is seems that TI does not produce a similar product?):

  • Bidirectional
  • VRM: 36V
  • VBR(max): 43.3V
  • VCL: 61V
  • IPP: 3A

As the clamp is fully active at 61V (below the max limit of 70V), this seems to provide a sufficient level of protection.

We would appreciate if you could confirm/disconfirm if this is a suitable selection.

Thanks

  • Hi Christian,

The values you listed for the TVS look good for TCAN1051HGV protection. VRM: 36v is below normal operating voltages, VCL: 61v has enough buffer below +-70V to allow for temperature variance, and the device specifies values for 8/20us waveforms. Note that the added junction capacitance may need to be taken into account for the design of the CAN bus.

If you would like more information on TVS diode selection, this application report explains a lot of the parameters:

Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns about your selection.

  • Hi Eric

Thanks a lot for confirming that the TVS is a good match!

We will go through the application note also - thanks.
