TPS65987D: part differences to TPS65988 and TPS65988DJ

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65988, , TPS65988DJ,

Can I update the TPS65987D to a TPS65988 and route out the extra CC2 bus and HPD signals accordingly so I can use the same I2C interfaces to manage a single device or one with two USB interfaces?

Are the TPS65987D and TPS65988 pinouts and size the same so they are drop-in compatible?

Are they based on the same firmware and HW where a single SW build would support either IC?

Additionally, for the TPS65988, can you let me know the differences between the TPS65988 and the TPS65988DJ?

  • Hi David,

The TPS65988 is recommended for dual port devices while the TPS65987D is recommended for single port devices. They both have the same package, however, they are not pin-to-pin compatible as the TPS65987D ground some of the pins that are used by TPS65988 (CC pins for example). The TPS65987D and TPS65988 have the same firmware base image, however, the configuration used on the TPS65988 is different from that used on the TPS65987D.

The TPS65988DJ/TPS65987DDJ are only approved for use in TBT device designs following an Intel reference design, or in a TBT PC Host application. Approval from our marketing team is required before a project may use the DJ version. TPS65988DH/TPS65987DDH are recommended for use for all other Type-C/PD applications.

    Thank you,
    Eric
