TCAN1046V-Q1: Can this device survive a worse case short circuit between its bus pins? is there a short circuit failure mode to worry about between the two pins and 55V?

Part Number: TCAN1046V-Q1

Can this device survive every short circuit between its two bus pins?

Is there a short circuit failure mode to worry about between the two pins and +/-55V? (The device claims fault protection to +/- 58V)

And mentions:

"The TCAN104xV has several protection features that limit the short circuit current when a CAN bus line is
shorted."

basically, is this device fully protected against any and all short circuit up to the stated limit of +/- 58V?

thanks!

  • Senthil,

There is an internal current limiting (for the recessive and dominant bus states) that will protect the device from catastrophic damage in the event of a bus pin shorting to battery (even when it is at the +/-58V level). There is also dominant state time out to prevent permanent higher short-circuit current of the dominant state in case a short-to-battery occurs on the CAN bus.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

    Regards,
