PCA9306: Used as 1.8V I2C switch

Part Number: PCA9306

Hi Team,

In the datasheet, PCA9306 can be configured as I2C switch in Section 8.1.5. However, in section 9.2.1, it is stated that VREF2 is VREF1+0.6V. It looks like both section are contradicted to each other. Would you please advice if PCA9306 can be configured as I2C switch with 1.8V level? Thanks.

Best regards,

Andy Chu

  • Andy,

Section 8.1.5: "PCA9306 has the capability of being used with its VREF1 voltage equal to VREF2. This essentially turns the device from a translator to a device which can be used as a switch"

The device is meant to be used as a level shifter but CAN be used as a switch. Vref1 and Vref2 rules don't apply anymore when you only use it a switch (no level translation).

9.2.1: device is used as a level translator, you need to follow the rules provided.

Two different sets ups with two different applications in mind. They don't contradict each other, they specify two different ways to use the device depending on if you want to level translate or use as a switch without level translation.
