Hello,

I am trying to use the evaluation module to apply power to a phone while a microcontroller is attached in USB OTG mode.

The goal is to charge the phone while it is in USB OTG and the microcontroller is attached via USB2.0 and the microcontroller will provide power to the phone. The controller has it's own large battery to keep the phone topped off. I have a Cypress Semiconductor EZ-PD that is able to charge while in USB OTG, but I want to stay with all TI brand chips in this product.

I am able to get USB communication or charging, but not both same time. I have pin 1 on, and tried all variations of pin 7-8 for different modes. I shorted the diode for D9 and D11. I can only get charging mode if manually jumper the ID pin to GND on J2.

Hi Zach,

There seems to be multiple things going on here. Please make sure that TUSB320 is in DRP or DFP mode when testing. When in the charging mode what is the state of the microelectronic? Does it attempt to enumerate with the phone? TUSB320 should not impact USB data as USB 2 bus is shorted from port to port. Does micro-controller monitor TUSB320 pins in GPIO mode?

I am not certain state of microcontroller. It typically acts as serial port when attached to a PC. I am not monitoring pins. Do I need to monitor pins or send i2c commands to get this to charge while in data mode? sometimes if I short the ID pin to GND it will charge, but will not do data in OTG mode while charging in that state. My cypress kit from lava sync 1u-oem works, but unclear if they have special firmware on the chip to achieve.

Hi Zach,

Do you have R5 populated? What you are seeing is a manual activation of the on-board TPS25910 causing the phone to charge. Can you monitor ID with a scope or multi meter? Does the ID pin state change when a type-C device is plugged in?

No, what value should R5 be?

It can be a direct short or 0 ohm resistor.

I shorted R5. I see ID line will go low 300ms on USB plug in when switch 1 and switch 7 on (DFP). I can not get communication or charging function to occur though. Only when set as UFP (switch 8). Does shorted diode for D9 and D11 matter?

I have 5V being provided on the microUSB port to attempt and charge device, R32 removed.

Hi Zack,

I believe this is correct function as i understand it. D9 and D11 should be installed depending on where you would like power to come from. D11 should be installed by default so the Type-C port is powered by the DC 5V jack or Micro USB port. If D9 is installed on the board, do not connect the EVM to a USB Host system through the micro-AB USB2 connector(J6) at the same time 5 V is supplied through 5-V DC IN J5 or Type-C Connector J7. Removing R32 only isolates the DC 5V jack.

I was never able to get this chip to work, but I was with this kit:

I was able to get this to work with the TPS65987EVM. I attached the microcontroller D+/D-/Gnd and the 5V from controller to VA R_DCDC. I had to use the Application customization tool to make it work.
