In reviewing the layout guidelines there is no mention of how far away the magnetics can be from the controller. For 100base T I have seen max lengths of 4 inches but I'm sure the attenuation at 1G would shorten he distance. I have a customer who wants the magnetics on a different board through a flex cable and I am sure there will be massive degradation regardless of skew considerations.
Is he guidelines for laying out 1000Tbase and higher and the maximum length? Can one meet the requirements if the magnetics were next to the PHY and the connector was 6 inches away?
