MAX3243: Hot plugging use case

Part Number: MAX3243

Hello application team,

I have a couple of questions about hot plugging use case for MAX3243CPW.
Could you answer if there is any potential issue such ESD over stress on the device under the following conditions?
The device is connected with a D-sub connector and a wire harness which would like to do hot plugging with sourcing VCC into the device.

(1) Hot plugging when FORCEOFF=Low, is it an acceptable use case?
(2) Hot plugging when FORCEON=Low with RIN=Invalid or Open, is it an acceptable use case?

Thanks in advance.

  • Sawamoto-san,

I guess the setup is that MAX3243 is always powered on when hot plug-in happens. If this is true, I think both of the case should work fine. In both cases, the driver is disabled and DOUT is in high impedance while RIN has 5kOhm to ground. The ESD events should have limited impact on the device. If you want to have a better protection device, MAX3243E can be considered too. Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Regards,

    Hao
