DS90UB933-Q1: Using DS90UB933-Q1 to serialize audio data

Part Number: DS90UB933-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS90UB934-Q1, , TLV320ADC6140, DS90UA101-Q1, DS90UA102-Q1

Dear TI team,

I am designing a microphone array, where I want to send Audio data (in TDM format) from the array over a communication cable (using LVDS protocol) and interpret them on the other side. Therefore I am intending to use DS90UB933-Q1 for the serialization of audio data on one side and DS90UB934-Q1 as a deserializer on the other side.

I know the DS90UB933-Q1 is mainly designed for sending camera data, but if my assumption is that if we are capable of sending the TDM data to the serializer, and interpreting the data output from the deserializer on the other side, that there shouldn't be a problem regarding communication. Or is there some sort of limitation, where DS90UB933-Q1 can only be used for image data but not for any other kind of data?

Thanks for your support in advance!

  • Hello Amr,

Can you please provide some more information on the signalling speeds and pulse widths for these audio signals?

    Thanks,
    Casey

  • Hello Casey,

    Thank you for your reply.

Generally speaking I want to use the following :

Number of audio channels : 16

Bitwidth of each audio channel : 24 bit

Sampling rate of each audio channel : 44.1 KHz

    Therefore the signaling rate shall equal  : 441000 x 24 x 16 = 16.94 Mbps

Would that be possible with this serializer ?

Generally speaking the audio signal shall be in TDM or I2S format as described in pages 21 and 22 of the tlv320adc6140 datasheet (https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tlv320adc6140.pdf).

If you need any further information, please let me know.

    Thanks, Amr

  • Hi Amr,

A better option for you might be the DS90UA101-Q1 and DS90UA102-Q1. This was designed for audio transmission.

In terms of DS90UB933-Q1, it hasn't been done so no testing to confirm this but you might be able to do it if the signal transmission is similar to that of LVDS. However the receiving device on the deserializer output side needs to be able to handle more bandwidth. This is because, even at the lowest rate, the DS90UB933-Q1 would be transmitting at 700Mbps. This would also result in more jitter on the output because you'll be oversampling.
