TUSB321: Configuration issues when using TUSB321 as UFP

Part Number: TUSB321
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25910, , HD3SS3212

The Type-C power supply solution is shown in the attachment. The Type-C interface is the uplink data transmission and power supply interface of the USB3.1 GEN2 HUB. The entire HUB solution requires a power supply of 5V 3A. Use TUSB321 as UFP to configure the CC1 and CC2 pins. And a load switch TPS25910 is used to control the 5V VBUS power to prevent its current from breaking the limit. How will I_MODE PIN handle when the TUSB321 is in UFP mode? The data sheet only mentions the configuration in DFP and DRP mode as shown in the attached chart. Since the HUB is in USB3.1 GEN2 mode, do you use a TUSB321 DIR_PIN to control a MUX to distinguish the polarity after access, and DIR should How to design, read a lot of solutions, use 10k resistor to pull up 3.3V, but in my design, because the 5V_VBUS of the type-c interface needs to pass the load switch and then DC TO DC to generate 3V3, and this solution need not be emark Chip power supply, how to handle FLT # _pin, there is no MCU and other processors in this solution.

  • you mean Port pin? it should be PD to low in UFP mode. DIR pin is used to control MUX with SEL pin. For FLT pin you may need to check with product line for TPS25910.

  • I don't think you understand what I mean. How to set the TUSB321 I_MODE_PIN in UFP mode, and how to set the TUSB321 FLT # _PIN when no external MCU is needed. Please look at my question again, thank you.

  • sorry, you mean  current_mode pin. Current _mode pin is used only for DFP or DFP mode in DRP. If you only use UFP, Current_mode pin can be unconnected or leave it open.

What do you mean of FLT#_pin of TUSB321?

  • When the TUSB321 is configured in UFP mode, I pull OUT1 and OUT2 to ground so that it can provide a maximum current of 3A when the upstream device detects the TUSB321 CC cable. The I-MODE pin I mentioned above is the third lead of the device. Pin, that is, CURRENT_MODE, the data sheet only provides the CURRENT_MODE setting method in DFP mode, does not provide the requirements for UFP configuration? I do n’t need an external USB switching device. I would like to ask how to handle the DIR pin of TUSB321. Can it be left floating? In my design, the TUSB321 VCON power supply function will not be used. What will happen to the VCONN_FAULT pin?

  • OUT1/OUT2 are open drain  output pin, you need to pullup to 3.3v or 5v. it only broadcast the current mode it detected and you can not force it to 3A.

for DIR pin, you need to pullup to high and it used to control the external mux like HD3ss3212.

For Vcon, you can leave it open if not used.
