Pre-programmed flash memories

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

Hello!

In many products there are flash memories, that are pre-programmed, and i want to know where do you get these memories?

As i see, in some cases its better to order/buy pre-programmed flash memories with the FW on it, and ignore the programming aspect in the PCB design.

I want to know where one could order/buy these and how it works?   Whats the process flow, programming fee and MOQ ?

In many TI products this approach is recommended, like in TPS65982 for an example.

  • Hi Eriks,

From my understanding, you hire a vendor or contractor to program flash memories with a firmware image that you provide to them. However, I do not know of specific companies to do this or whom you contact.

One idea is to have the board house that you build your PCBs through perform this task. Can write up a brief description and provide the programmers, and have them program the flash memories before they solder them.

But how would this work? If using pick&place machine, flash memories are in tapes or reels, if you flash them, how you automate the rest of the process ? Whats the work/process flow of this ?

  • They would need to remove each IC and program it individually, and then return them to the reel. Or program the IC and then solder it by hand. This would be up to the board house though so I recommend getting in contact with whomever you decide to use.
