SN65HVD1786: J1708 option settings

Dear Support,

I see that our SN65HVD17xx can get options to be set in J1708 mode.

Could you clarify what must be done to be compliant with J1708 Applications?

Can we just invert the Driver Enable (DE) pin of the SN65HVD1786?

Is there a SN65HVD1708E version which exists somewhere?

    Hello,

    I don't believe the SN65HVD1708E product variant was ever moved to production.  However, you are correct that a standard RS-485 transceiver like SN65HVD1786 could be used for J1708 communication.  You would need to invert the polarity on the DE line, tie the D input to GND, and use the recommended bus biasing/termination circuit for J1708.  Figure 4 in this application note gives an example circuit:
