TCAN4550: What is the maximum data rate in the classic CAN mode

Part Number: TCAN4550

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering TCAN4550 and has a question.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

What is the maximum data rate in the classic CAN mode.

Could it possible to think it's the same as CANFD mode(5Mbps)?

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

This is a great question. Since the driver for TCAN4550 supports these rates for CAN FD, it will will have no problem driving these speeds for classic CAN data. However, increasing the speed of classic CAN means also evaluating system-wide delays to ensure proper arbitration is still possible. CAN FD only uses the increased speed for the data portion of the packet where no arbitration takes place. There is content in our pipeline this quarter regarding these considerations.

The datasheet states that TCAN4550's CAN controller and physical layer support both classic CAN and CAN FD up to 5Mbps and up to 8Mbps for CAN FD. It may be possible to achieve higher speeds in some systems - look forward to an app note on this.

    Regards,

    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

    Thank you for your reply.

I could find the description on the datasheet P.20 8.1 Overview, it was up to 5Mbps for classical CAN and CAN FD.

    I couldn't find a description for 8Mbps.

Could it be possible to think up to 8Mbps for CAN FD?

    I appreciate your great help.

    Best ragars,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

    Sorry for the delay.

I was referencing the datasheet for TCAN4550-Q1. This device is electrically very similar and should display similar behavior when increasing data rates. This datasheet states "The TCAN4550-Q1 is a CAN FD controller with an integrated CAN FD transceiver supporting data rates up to 8 Mbps."

Please note that the standards-based information and certification testing is only specified up to 2Mbps. These expected behaviors may wavers at speeds in excess to this. Also note that these speeds were achieved in a lab setting with more ideal conditions than may be expected in automotive or industrial applications.

    Regards,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

    Thank you for your reply.

I could confirm TCAN4550-Q1 has a capacity of 8Mbps and TCAN4550 has the same.

    The customer's questions are cleared.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
