TUSB1210: VBUS capacitor

Part Number: TUSB1210

Hi team,

My customer considers to use TUSB1210 and provided a question in terms of Vbus capacitor value.

Table 11 shows that when its function is VBUS - HOST, Vbus capacitor should be more than 120uF.

Since 120uF capacitor takes relatively large area, they would like to reduce it.

What is the reason of 120uF for Vbus capacitor and what is concern when it's less than 120uF?

I'm looking forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards,

Shota Mago

  • Hello Shota Mago,

The capacitance value is derived from the USB specification to limit VBUS droop under max in rush current conditions.  You can read more about it in Section 7.2.4.1 of the USB 2.0 specification.  A smaller value can be used if the VBUS rail is only used for a single exposed port and not shared among several ports.
