Dear Ben,
We typically do not recommend fixing EQ values in our devices, because you won't support cable aging/temp drift if you de-activate the automated equalization.
What you can do is limit the EQ range after testing your full setup and determining a min and max EQ that would work in your application. That way the equalizer still has some flexibility in case something goes wrong with your link, and can jump to the next value to ensure a continuity of operation.
I encourage you to read the following application note, describing our margin analysis program http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla301/snla301.pdf.
Following the results you obtain with this tool, you'll be able to target the middle of the "eye" and set the EQ floor and max value, as well as the stobe position min/max (registers 0xD5 and 0x41, described in the application note and in the datasheet).
With this technique you'll improve the lock speed.
Let me know if that works for you!
Best regards,
Pial
