TUSB8041A: 1.1V core supply - recommended power supply

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS74801,

Hello,

the EVM for TUSB8041A (SLLU198) uses an LDO (TPS74801) for the 1.1V core supply (from 3.3V input).

The 8041A datasheet specifies up to 670 mA of current on 1.1 V in worst case (4 ports active). That would mean around 1.5 W of dissipation on the LDO, which would make it run quite hot.

Are the current consumption values correct? If so, is it fine to use a good dc/dc instead of LDO?

Thanks.

  • Hi Bart,

Current numbers in the datasheet are correct and yes, devices can get quite hot under those conditions.  Thermal pads for power devices as well as the hub are required and we recommend making sure there is a good copper in the board to help with the dissipation.

Please note that it is somewhat unusual to have all 4 USB 3.0 devices in U0 simultaneously.  Most USB 3.0 drivers / devices enable the lower power states pretty aggressively.

Yes, a DC/DC can be used instead of a LDO.

    Regards,
