TPS65987D: Power Path Protection

Hi Team,

The hardware design guide for the TPS65987D includes a statement that said “There are various protection designs that can be considered: input power filter (ferrite bead and capacitor), soft-start circuit (power FET), or input filter with TVS.” Do we have any example schematics with any of these protection schemes? I was not able to find any in any reference designs or technical documents we have provided online.

Hello Matt,

I'm not sure if we have a specific reference design for these schemes, but for a protection device you could use something like the TPD6S300A. For a TVS diode, you could use the TVS2200 and place it on VBUS to prevent damage due voltage ringing rising above the abs max of the TPS65987D

Thanks for your response. My understanding would be you'd need both the TVS2200 connected between VBUS and GND and the TPD6S300A for the CC/SBU lines for a full protection scheme correct?

Yes that is correct. The TPD6S300A will protect against a short to VBUS event to the CC/SBU lines, while the TVS2200 will protect against an overvoltage event on VBUS that rises above the abs max rating for the TPS65987D and the TPD6S300A
