Hello,

I'd like to ask what is the purpose of the diode in red circle on the picture attached?

Wouldn't the circuit work without this diode the same?

Probably the answer is simple, and I'm missing somethink.

Regards,

Adam

  • Hi Adam,

    Welcome to E2E!

The TPD1E05U06 is a unidirectional device which uses the diode circled in red to essentially "hide" the zener diode when a negative ESD strike reaches the I/O.

When a negative ESD strike appears on the I/O, the diode circled in red will be reverse biased and block the path. In the other hand the bottom diode will be forward biased a will dissipate energy to ground. This structure is used to have a lower capacitance for high speed data lines since both diodes will have a lower capacitance than the zener diode.

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Best regards,

    Andy Robles

  • Thank you for thorought explanation.

I would not guess it's about capacity.

    Adam
