TUSB4041I: How to get a USB-C device be in Upstream/Host mode and also be Charged simultaneously?

I'm using a TUSB4041I Eval board.  I have a Samsung S9 phone as the upstream/host device, and I have a few peripherals plugged in via the TI USB Hub.

The setup works fine but I also need to charge the phone while using the peripheral USB devices.  Fast charging is not a requirement.  I will provide the 5V source to charge the phone.

I 've read that this is possible with Micro USB.  You can tie the ID pin to ground with a 50k resistor and the phone will both act as a host AND receive a charge.  But the Samsung S9 has USB-C which has no ID pin.  Is this possible with USB-C?

    Hi Matt,

    USB OTG (on-the-go) is an older USB spec supported with Micro USB connectors and the ID pin.  It is unlikely that a phone with a Type C connector supports USB OTG since only a subset of USB products do. 

    USB Type C / PD allows for role swap of data and power using the control signals in the Type-C cable, this is more likely what the Samsung phone supports, but the specifics would not be something TI can answer.  I can tell you that our hubs do not support any data role swapping, the upstream port always expects to be connected to a USB host.
