DP83867CS: Example TIDA-00204 has this chip but chip pins are wrong, magnetics are suspicious

Part Number: DP83867CS
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83867E, DP83867IR, TIDA-00204

The device U6 which is a DP83867CS in the example design that's supposed to showcase it, well, the pin numbers are wrong on it.  Right off the bat I noticed that what's pin 1 on the chip is pin 2 in that design, and I'm sure other pins are wrong.  It apparently has 4 "Reserved" pins in that design that don't even exist on the chip according to its datasheet.

Also, the design has all of the Ethernet pins going to the magnetics all reversed (1+ connected to 4-  connected to  1+,  2- connected to 3+ connected to 2-), or so it seems; it seems to work out, however, as a first-time designer going for an Ethernet design, the fact that the wires are reversed going into AND coming out of the magnetics is unnerving at least.  Is it really correct though?   The magnetics SEEM to be readily reversible, but are they really?

I'd actually trust the design's reversal of magnetics if the pin numbers for the DP83867CS weren't all wrong.

Somebody ought to look at this design and fix that chip.   Really.

Best Regards,

Rob Stoddard

  • Hi Robert,

The DP83867 family of devices contains multiple orderable part numbers. DP83867IR/CR devices support MII, GMII, and RGMII MAC interfaces and the DP83867E/IS/CS support RGMII and SGMII interfaces.

The DP83867IR/CR is also offered in a 48 pin QFN package or 64 pin QFP package. The pin numbering changes between the 48 pin and 64 pin and can be found in the datasheet, with additional pins and features available in the 64 pin package.

The part referenced in TIDA-00204 is the 64 pin DP83867IRPAPR.

    Regards,
    Justin

  • Huh...  I thought I'd combed through all the possible options looking for that one.   Ok.   My bad.   :/

Thank you for the prompt reply.
