TPS65988: How does PD controller identify USB2.0 or USB3.0 device?

Hi expert,

My customer has some question on USB2 and USB3 connection as below.

How would I know that the connection is USB2.0 or USB3.0?

What if an USB2.0 drive connects to USBC connector via USB typeA to typeC dongle. How does our PD controller will show U2 or U3 connection?

Does this connection decide from CC communication or VDM message?

Hello Oliver,

I believe you are talking about non-PD Type A to Type C connector. For the PD controller its a legacy connection and the PD controller will not be able to distinguish USB speed as no PD communication is involved in this case. So, PD controller will report USB2 and USB3 connection to EC.

Now, its the USB host controllers responsibility to update the speed based on device enumeration.
