TCAN4550-Q1: Crystal selection TCAN4550-Q1

Part Number: TCAN4550-Q1

Hi all,

I´m doing a new design with this component and I have doubt in order to select the crystal oscillator. In the point 9.1.1 Crystal and Clock Input Requirements says:

"Selecting the crystal or clock input depends upon system implementation. To support 2 and 5 Mbps CAN FD the
clock in or crystal needs to have 0.5% frequency accuracy. The minimum value of 20 MHz is needed to support
CAN FD with a rate of 2 Mbps. The recommended value for CLKIN or crystal is 40 MHz to meet CAN FD rates
up to 5 Mbps data rates in order to support higher data throughout. If a crystal is used see the manufacturer’s
documentation on proper biasing."

But, if my CAN speed is 250 kbps could I use an 8MHz crystal? (this is the one that I use for the uC of the board and in order designs)

Thanks for your support.

  • Damfer,

Using a 8MHz clock should work if you're only using 250kbps. This leaves you with enough time quanta to set a sufficient sample point.

20MHz or 40MHz clock is necessary in case the design needs to utilize 2 or 5Mbps speeds.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

    Regards,
