SN65HVD235: ESD Issue

Part Number: SN65HVD235

Hello team,

My customer has been using SN65HVD235 CAN driver in their design for years. They have not had ESD issues in the past, however  now they’re getting some hard and soft failures. Some times it fails and burns out the CPU port. On the soft fail something in the protection fails and it draws 30-40 mA more current. The outputs still function, but the IC gets hot. The part is rated to +/-15kV and the customer is testing at +/- 8kV.  They have additional clamping on the ports from a PESD2IVN27-UX TVS part. This is the only port failing. Has something changed in the device? This is causing a lot of trouble passing certifications.  Also, I have partial schematics that I can send internally if needed.

Thank you in advance for your support!

  • Errol,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is strange that the customer has never seen an issue with this part and is now seeing one. Just to answer your question, there haven't been any changes to this device, so the ESD performance should remain the same.

It would be good to share the schematics through email, and in that email can you also describe the test setup and procedure?

    Regards,
