This is Sridharan.

We are Designing an Adapter Module Operates with a 5V Supply External and has two USB type c port

1. one for USB DRP (host/sink) - USB Plug

2. one upstream facing port (USB dongle or mass storage device). - USB device

We have chosen TPS65988 USB Type C Power delivery 3.0 controller used to provide simultaneously charge the Host as Source Sink mode and allows for data transfer from the Host through an external USB-C device.We using the Intenal Ath for both source (5V @2A) and Sink

We have a chosen TUSB8020B USB Hub to use with controller , We also need to terminate USB2 D+/D- signals.

We dont have schematics file though we have arrived at architecture from EVM guide. Kindly let us know if this would suit our requirements

Hello Sridhar,

The architecture looks good to me except SS connection. Only one set of the Type C SS lines are connected, that means Type C reversible connection wont work.

You will have to use a mux to support reversible connection, something like - https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/hd3ss3212.pdf?&ts=1589218577672

We will use the MUX HD3SS3212 as suggested. We have few more doubts

Since we have space constraints on the board, we have the following query

1. Is the External Oscillator need for both PD controller TPS65988DHRSHR and TUSB8020B or it can work with Internal clock

2. Do we need to use the SPI Flash for TPS65988DHRSHR and EEPROM for TUSB8020B or the it can work with default configurations and any firmware update can be done over USB

3. For the USB 2.0 data line Shall we short DP1 and DP2 and DN1 and DN2 lanes and directly route it to Hub from Connector to Hub as we need to USB 2.0 on downstream port

Please provide your reply to proceed further

[Prajith] No, TPS65988DHRSHR do not require external oscillator.

Looking at the datasheet, TUSB8020B requires crystal or clock input. I suggest you to interact with Hub team on TUSB8020B related queries.

2. Do we need to use the SPI Flash for TPS65988DHRSHR and EEPROM for TUSB8020B or the it can work with default configurations and any firmware update can be done over USB

[Prajith] TPS65988DHRSH requires external SPI flash.

Regarding TUSB8020B, please find the text below taken from DS.

"The TUSB8020B provides terminal strap configuration for some features including battery charging support, and also provides customization though OTP ROM, I 2C EEPROM or through an I 2C/SMBus slave interface for PID, VID, and custom port and phy configurations. Custom string support is also available when using an I 2C EEPROM or the I 2C/SMBus slave interface."

I suggest you to interact with Hub team on TUSB8020B related queries.

3. For the USB 2.0 data line Shall we short DP1 and DP2 and DN1 and DN2 lanes and directly route it to Hub from Connector to Hub as we need to USB 2.0 on downstream port

[Prajith] Yes, short DP1-DP2 and DN1-DN2 of both Upstream and downstream connectors. Route it to respective hub ports.

Regarding the SPI flash in the data sheet says optional external flash memory, Thats y i have asked shall we have default configuration without SPI flash?

A portion of the digital core contains ROM memory which contains all the necessary firmware required to execute Type-C and PD applications. In addition, a section of the ROM, called boot code, is capable of initializing the TPS65988, loading of device configuration information, and loading any code patches into volatile memory in the digital core.

The TPS65988 is an I2C slave to be controlled by a host processor (see the I2C Interfaces section), and an SPI
master to write to and read from an optional external flash memory (see the SPI Master Interface section).

Can you please clarify

Hi Sridhar,

TPS65988 is a fixed function devices. So, external flash is required for FW patches.

I2C boot is supported only for PC/NB customers. In your design, an external SPI flash is a must.

Do you have Hub controller with Inbuilt PD 3.0 / FRS support.

We need two ports : Upstream to act as DRP (Source/Sink) up to 10W and downstream port ( USB device)

What is the DJ means?? Cost wise it is higher in mouser. Could you please confirm funstional differeces between these two ??

87D/88(DJ) Requires TI-pre-approval: FW features specific to Intel PC/Notebook and Thunderbolt reference designs.
