TDP142: Can TDP142 be used for both DP1.4 and HDMI 2.0 redriver ?

Part Number: TDP142
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDS181, TMDS171

Dear Sir,

Is it possibe to use DP142 as HDMI2.0 rx/tx rediver?

Best regards.

  • Tiger

No, to support HDMI 2.0 would require a DP to HDMI active protocol converter. DP142 can only support DP1.4.

    Thanks

    David

  • Dear David,

I understand both DP and HDMI linear redriver are working without  protocol ,  it doesn't like retimer.  and meanwhile , both DP and HDMI are based 8B/10B coding and AC coupled.

So, I think TDP142 linear redriver is suitbable for HDMI redriver.

    Is it right?

    Best regards.

  • Tiger

No, there are differences among DP, HDMI, and DP++.

A DP source supports DP protocol and DP signaling (AC coupled).

A HDMI source supports HDMI protocol and HDMI signaling (DC coupled).

A DP++ source supports DP protocol and DP signaling (AC coupled) or HDMI protocol and DP signaling (AC coupled).

TDP142 is the linear redriver solution going from DP to DP

Going from DP to HDMI requires changing from DP protocol to HDMI protocol, and DP signaling to HDMI signaling. This is the active protocol converter and we do not have a solution.

TMDS171 or TMDS181 is the redriver/retimer solution for going from HDMI to HDMI.

TDP142 is also the linear redriver solution going from DP++ to DP.

DP158 or DP159 is the redriver/retimer solution going from DP++ to HDMI and often being referred as passive adapter or lever shifter.

    Thanks

    David
