SN65HVD230: Transmit CAN signal through digital isolator

Part Number: SN65HVD230
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO7742, , ISO1042

Hi,

My customer want to use CAN between DSP and ARM, and have question about whether the digital isolator can transfer CAN signal.

Solution 1: Use digital isolator ISO7742 after CAN transceiver, is it possible?

Solution 2:Use ISO7742 before CAN transceiver. Is it possible?

Another question, is it necessary to use two SN65HVD230 to transmit CAN signal?

Best Regards.

Chen

  • Hi Chen,

Digital isolators are designed to support logic signaling (e.g., TTL or CMOS) and generally cannot support the CAN physical layer directly (which is unique in using bidirectional differential dominant/recessive signaling).  So, the second picture you provided would be the more typical approach.  Note that isolated CAN transceivers like ISO1042 are available as well, which can help reduce the number of ICs required.

If you did need to add isolation to the CANH/CANL lines directly, this could be accomplished via the used of a mix of CAN transceivers, isolators, and digital logic.  An example implementation is given here:
