SN65DP159: DVI without I2C

Part Number: SN65DP159

Hello,

i will use the IC to source DVI videoa and i will not connect DDC line to communicate the source side and the sink side. Should i connect SDA_SNK/SCL_SNK or SDA_SRC/SCL_SRC from the source SoC device to the DP159? I am asking this because there is a note in the datasheet as you can see below.

Murat.

    1. If using the DP159, please make sure the DP159 is connected to a AC-coupled DVI source.

    2. For the DDC connection, the source SCL and SDA can be connected directly to the sink SCL and SDA. The DP159 SCL_SNK and SDA_SNK are then connected to this link, SCL_SRC and SDA_SRC are tied to GND.

    Thanks

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for your reply.

    1. I am planning to use DP159 and connect AC-coupled PCML output of my source device.

    2. I will not send DDC connection to the connector, I will just connect the 4 pair of data and clock lines. So, i should conncet source SCL and SDA to SCL_SNK and SDA_SNK even if i have not a i2c line coming from connector. I want to clarify this.

    3. I must connect a i2c line from the source to the SCL_CTL/SDA_CTL pins of DP159 in order to configure the DP159, right?

The source queries the display's capabilities by reading the display's EDID block, how are you going to read the display's capability without connecting the DDC bus to the DVI connector?

If you don't plan to use the DDC, you can tie SDA_SNK and SCL_SNK high through 4.7k resistors.

DP159 can be configured either in the pin-strap or the I2C mode. You don't have to connect the DP159 I2C interface (SDA_CTL/SCL_CTL) to configure the DP159, but I would recommend having the I2C interface for debugging purpose. If unused, you can terminate the SDA_CTL and SCL_CTL to 3.3V through 4.7k resistors.

    Thanks

  • David,

The display i'm going to use is predefined. So i think there is no problem with not connecting the DDC line.

    Thank you for your answers.
