TPD4E1U06: USB 2.0 Vbus ESD protection

Part Number: TPD4E1U06

Hi,

I am planning to use TPD4E1U06 for ESD protection(EC 61000-4-2, Level 4) on a single USB 2.0 port.
In TPD4E1U06, D+ is connected to Pin 1 and D- is connected to Pin 4.

I want to protect the Vbus line also from ESD. I have not seen any design where in Vbus is connected to Pin 3 or 6 in the IC.

Can I connect Vbus to Pin 3 or 6 for ESD protection? Why/Why not? (I know I can always connect Vbus to a separate TVS diode, but question is specific to connecting Vbus to an input port of the TPD4E1U06.)

  • Hi Amal,

In order to know if the VBUS power line may be able to be connected to either Pin3 or Pin6 of the TPD4E1U06 for ESD protection you would need to know the magnitude of the possible ESD transients on the VBUS power line in your application. The lifetime of the TPD4E1U06 could be derated or may end up damaged if any ESD or fault conditions on the VBUS power line result in exceeding any of the abs max specs, or ESD ratings of the device. If you don't expect the ESD/Fault conditions to exceed the maximum ratings of the TPD4E1U06 then you may use the other channels for VBUS, but if you expect for VBUS to have higher power ESD transients then I would suggest using a higher rated protection device for that line.

    Best regards,

  • Thanks. That's what I was thinking too. It was putting a doubt in my mind because I hadnt seen any design connecting the way I had suggested. Always seemed to connect via an external standard TVS diode. Any particular reason why this is never shown in any designs?

I dont expect the ESD ratings in Vbus to exceed maximum ratings of the IC or to be different from the transients in D+/D- line in terms of ESD.

  • Hi Amal,

There is no particular reason it is not shown in the datasheet. If you don't foresee higher ESD events on VBUS then the TPD4E1U06 can be used to protect the power rail.
