TPS65988DJ: Effect of capacitance on CC pin

Part Number: TPS65988DJ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD6S300A

Hi expert,

My customer design has 220pF on CC pin with TPD6S300A, this recommend from the schematic checklist, but customer's EMI team ask them to add capacitance up to 330pF, Is this going to cause any side effect? And how to verify this modification is available?

  • Hi Oliver,

I would recommend using the 220pF capacitor when using the TPS6S300A. The TPD6S300A has a nominal capacitance of 74pF on the CC lanes, with a maximum capacitance of 120pF. So with the 220pF capacitor and the TPD6S300A, the total system capacitance on the CC channels will be close to 330pF.

  • Hi Adam,

Thank you for your comment, may I know the reason to stay close to 330pF? Is there any spec that can share with us?

  • Hi Oliver,

It is a comment in the datasheet as well as defined in the USB Spec. Here is the excerpt from the datasheet.

CRECEIVER includes only the internal capacitance on a C_CCn pin when the pin is configured to be receiving BMC data. External capacitance is needed to meet the required minimum capacitance per the USB-PD Specifications. TI recommends adding capacitance to bring the total pin capacitance to 300 pF for improved TX behavior
