TPS65987D: Enabling USB 3.0 with DisplayPort

Part Number: TPS65987D

Hello,

My customer is trying to configure this part to work in multifunction mode (pass both DP 1.4 and USB 3.0), but we are having some trouble.

In the GUI tool, register 0x51 bit 34 is called out as "Force USB Configuration", but Table 3-62 in the TRM says byte 5 bits 7:1 is Reserved. Perhaps this bit refers to Byte 6 bit 1? It's not clear from the name. We are wondering if this would help enable USB 3.0 and DisplayPort.

Also, when I try to use Debug Mode in the GUI tool, every bit of every register reads back as 1, i.e. Mode (0x3) reads 0xffffffff. We cannot confirm the part is configured as set in the tool.

What would be needed to help diagnose this issue?

Thanks,

Michael

  • Hi Michael,

I would refer to what is shown in the configuration tool. Another reason for not supporting both USB and DP is if the DP mode entered into supports 4 lane DP. This is determined based on the pin configuration that have have set and which one is currently negotiated. Recommend to look up the pin advertisements for DP and only enable the ones that support both DP and USB.

As far as the debug mode reading, this is typically caused by having faulty read values from the FTDI on the EVM. Would suggest using a different laptop or USB port on that laptop to see if the behavior while in debug mode changes. Also, make sure that you are connected to the device which is indicated by the Big green text box in the top right hand corner of the GUI. If you see a red box, this means you are not connected to the EVM, and would suggest making sure you have the correct I2C address selected in the configuration tool
