TPS65983B: Programming needed or not

Part Number: TPS65983B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS460, , TPS65988, TPS65987D

Hi,

In our design we planning to use a combination of TPS65983B and HD3SS460 for alternate mode purpose and no High power in or out is required. as per datasheet we have connected the AMSEL, HPD and POL pin is connected. now do we need to program it after the assembly or it comes by pre-programmed for the default notebook application.

  • Hi Revanth,

Each of the TPS6598x USB PD Controllers has an Application Configuration GUI Tool linked in its product folder. This tool is used to create a configuration project to customize the PD Controller operation to the user's specific requirements. These customization are merged with a device Firmware and may be exported as a programmable binary file or programmed directly using the tool. All TPS6598x family devices need to load a firmware with application customization data to fully function.

There is a specific TPS65983B GUI Tool linked in its product folder. The TPS65983B has a special GUI because this device is intended for use in Intel Thunderbolt reference designs and its GUI is customized for this application.

If you are not working on a Thunderbolt Reference design, I recommend evaluating the TPS65987D (one port) or TPS65988 (two ports) TI USB PD Controllers. These are general purpose devices with fully customizable Application Configuration GUIs.

    Regards.
