TPS65988EVM: Does the device support fixed DATA role with variable POWER role?

Part Number: TPS65988EVM

Hello,

We would like to use TPS65988 one of our product so we have tried some preliminary measurements on EVM.

There is a use case that we have not been able to solve so far: (blockdiagram attached)

  • When we plug in an IPAD (or any other USB-C device) we would like to powered the EVM from the battery of the IPAD OR if we have other power source (adapter or barrel jack) we would like to charge the IPAD. (It works well.)
  • While the power role changes we need to fix the data role and always use an USB 2.0 touch pad with IPAD.

Is it feasable?

We experienced that when the IPAD powered the EVM the Touch pad works but when we charge the IPAD it no longer works.

We tried SWAP commands (but we always get a REJECT_CMD response) and a lot of configurations.

Thanks,
Roland

  • Hi Roland,

The ability to be a Source/UFP and Sink/DFP is only available for Type-C PD devices. Before, if you were the sink you were also the UFP. Same with source and DFP.

After reading your description, it seems that the IPAD you are using does not support Type-C PD or does not accept data role swaps. The way to be sure of this is if you have a PD analyzer to read the messaging between the TPS65988EVM and the IPAD. The TPS65988 is capable of being a sink/DFP and source/UFP
