DS280MB810: Does the device support 56Gbps (PAM4) operation ?

Part Number: DS280MB810

Hello TI team,

We are currently using DS280MB810 on our 28Gbps (NRZ) links. Please clarify if the repeater is expected to work at 56Gbps (PAM4).

Thanks,

Dhiraj

  • Hello TI Team,

The following is the extract from the data sheet...

"The DS280MB810 supports two-level and four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) for symbol rates up to 28 Gbaud and peak signal amplitude within the linear operating range."

    Queries...

1] The above extract seems to suggest that the 28 Gbaud (56 Gbps) is supported by the device. Please confirm.

2] The IBIS AMI model for this part does not seem to be having support for 56Gbps. We are unable to simulate at 56Gbps. Please clarify.

3] Is there a separate model for 56Gbps (PAM4). If yes, please share the model.

    Thanks,

    Dhiraj

  • Hi Dhiraj,

DS280MB810 is a linear device and can support up to 44Gbps. Please send me email at nasser.mohammadi@ti.com so we can discuss your application in more details.

    Regards,, Nasser

  • Hello Nasser,

    Thanks for the quick clarification.

Please elaborate on the 44Gbps bit-rate.

1] Just to be very clear, what is the maximum bit-rate supported in the following modes of operation ?

         a. PAM2 (NRZ)

         b. PAM4

2] The maximum baud rate supported by the device is 22Gbauds (corresponding to 44Gbps). Please confirm.

3] The following is the data sheet extract for this device...

"The DS280MB810 supports two-level and four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) for symbol rates up to 28 Gbaud and peak signal amplitude within the linear operating range."

28 Gbaud mentioned above, needs to be corrected to 22Gbaud. Please confirm.

4] Does TI have any other footprint compatible repeater/redriver with the same multiplexing architecture, supporting 56Gbps (28Gbauds) ?

5] Was this device originally targeted to support 28Gbauds (56Gbps) ? And later on, the specifications were brought down ?

6] We would like to simulate at 56Gbps and based on the simulation results take a call on using this part in our 56G design. Is it ok to take this approach or do you strictly advice us to not consider this part for 56Gbps operation ?

7] Our application : We need to support 400Gbps optical ports (QSFP28-DD) in our new platform. We need 56Gbps redriver/repeater to bridge the on-board ASIC with the QSFP28-DD optics.

    Thanks,

    Dhiraj

  • Hi Dhiraj,

DS280MB810 is a linear equalizer and can operate for both NRZ and PAM4 multi-level signalling. Originally this part was targeted for 56Gbps PAM4 but further evaluation did not support operation at this rate. For NRZ it is rated at 28Gbps while for PAM4 we have been able to operate the device at up to 44Gbps or 22Gbaud. For roadmap products, please let's discuss this through email.

    Regards,, Nasser

  • Please note since we are discussing future products, through internal email we are discussing this with Dhiraj and colleagues.
