This part might have been subjected to an anomalous voltage condition similar to that of an HBM ESD Event. Condition can be characterized as +/-25V over a 1-2 microsecond duration, limited by source impedance of roughly 100 ohms.

Jon,
This device can stand up to 500V HBM ESD events. The bus pin's abs max is -10V to 15V. I'm not sure if it can survive +/-25V microsecond duration ESD events with serial 100Ohm (the duration of HBM events is less than 100ns). If you're looking for RS-485 transceivers with better ESD protection capability, please check out this post for some newly released parts.
