ESDS314: Applied for USB2.0 VBUS ESD protection

Part Number: ESDS314

Dear Team,

My customer is using ESDS314 to protect the USB 2.0 interface (including VBUS) against ESD.

They encountered a problem that the device frequently get burned when plugged into a usb host.

Just want to make sure that is ESDS314 suitable for VBUS esd protection?

Or is it only for data lines?

Thanks

Sincerely,

Edward

  • Hi Edward,

    Welcome to E2E!

The ESD314 should protect any line connected to the IO pins of the device as long as the DC voltage does not exceed the breakdown voltage of the ESDS314(4.5V Min).

I do have a couple questions in order to help trouble shoot the application:

    • Just to confirm it is the ESDS314 that is burning down an not something else on the board correct?
    • How many devices have been tested and how many got burned?(i.e. failure rate)
    • What is the working voltage range of VBUS?
    • When plugging into the USB host is a transient voltage that exceeds the breakdown voltage for longer periods of time than the ESD and Surge protection tests that the ESDS314 is rated for?

    Best regards,

  • Hi Andy,

       Thanks for your reply.

I try to answer your questions below.

    • Just to confirm it is the ESDS314 that is burning down an not something else on the board correct?

-> Yes, only the ESDS314 is burning down.

    • How many devices have been tested and how many got burned?(i.e. failure rate)

-> There are 10 devices have been tested and 5 of them got burned.

    • What is the working voltage range of VBUS?

-> 5V, Just think it is the main reason that get the device burned.

    • When plugging into the USB host is a transient voltage that exceeds the breakdown voltage for longer periods of time than the ESD and Surge protection tests that the ESDS314 is rated for?

-> Need to be captured in the near future.

    Thanks

    Sincerely,

    Edward

  • Hi Edward,

At 5V the ESDS314 is either at edge or has passed the breakdown voltage due to device variation. The working voltage of the ESDS314 is 3.6V and I would not recommend exceeding that voltage during normal operation.

A P2P device that could be positioned here if the customer can accept lower ESD and surge ratings would be the TPD4E1U06DBVR. This device has a working voltage range of up to 5.5V making it capable of supporting the data signals as well as VBUS.

Let me know if there's any questions.

    Best regards,

    Andy Robles
