TPS65987D: Setup via I2C instead of SPI?

In a design with the TPS65987D without flash mem, using Configuration 1, would it be possible to reprogram the device using I2C from an MCU, and if so is it possible to use the GUI tool to get the setup that needs to be done. Basically what registers needs programming and with what?

On request is a DFP only which offers 5,9,15 and 20V, 3A for charging.

Hello Thomas,

I2C flash download is supported only for Notebook designs.

External SPI flash is a must for non-Notebook applications.

Ok, so it can be done in a notebook design, that's good. How is that done then in a notebook design? What is it specfically that makes it possible then?

Isn't it possible to boot using Config 1 and then modify registers via I2C from MCU to get the wanted configration?

Hello Thomas,

TPS6598x (including DDJ meant for Notebook applications) PD controllers are ROM devices and it requires FW patches for full-fledged operation. TPS6598x loads FW patches from external SPI flash.

You can find in table 7 of datasheet that the device operation is limited (Power roles are limited, Alternate modes are not allowed, sink/src power is also limited) when booting up with ROM configurations. Its a must to have SPI flash for applying the latest fW patch.
